These days, it is not that uncommon to hear people say: “What are you doing playing ‘x’ at your age?”, or, “I thought ‘y’ was only for kids and youngsters.” This can bring people that want to learn to surf to ask themselves a very usual question: ‘Am I too old to learn how to surf?’ At Surfintrip we have a very clear answer to this question: Absolutely not! Surfing, like most sports, has no age limit.

It should actually be crazy to think that someone can not enjoy a healthy hobby simply because they are ‘too young’ or ‘too old’! For this reason, we, at Surfintrip, would like to answer a few questions on the matter and also give you some important tips on how to start surfing, no matter the age. Let’s start!

Am I Too Old to Learn How to Surf? The Main Requirement Is: Motivation!

When we try for the first time any kind of activity that requires an active participation, such as a sport, a board game or a videogame, the main requirements to enjoy them to their fullest are: motivation, energy and willingness. We firmly believe that without these qualities, anybody would soon find their new hobby boring and repetitive, to the point that it could even end up feeling like an actual chore and not something that helps us relax and enjoy ourselves.

The key is to have an open mind and keep ourselves engaged at all times. It’s really that easy! This means that the previous question, ‘Am I too old to learn how to surf?’, is completely irrelevant! Just worry about how to choose a surfboard. The rest is simple: have fun!

Surfing and Age: The Benefits Can Change Depending on It!

When thinking about the benefits we can enjoy while practising a sport like surfing, it’s important to clarify a few things: When we learn how to surf, the mental and physical benefits are going to be different depending on our age. To be clearer, let’s take in consideration these two cases: a kid’s body reacts quicker, which is very ideal in a demanding sport, such as surfing. Moreover, when a child plays with other children, it’s easier for them to establish strong social relationships.

That said, practising sports at an older age can also have very effective benefits: it keeps people busy for a long period of time, they stay in good shape and form, mind and body remain active from start to finish, and they rest up better at night due to the amount of energy spent during the activities. ‘Are you too old to learn how to surf?’ Absolutely not!

At our surf camp, we’ve been lucky enough to have participants that started surfing with us at the age of 50 years and older, and we can assure you the following: after numerous lessons and hours in the water, they achieved excellent results thanks to: motivation, commitment and perseverance.
