Evaluating the cost of practicing a sport is very subjective and certainly goes far beyond the price. Sport brings us physical and mental health. Surfing is a fully involving sport and the range of products and accessories for its practice is immense. Before answering the question of how much surfing costs, we should evaluate the number of times we will go to practice it and the budget we have got.
This can also include travel costs if you don’t live near the coast. One of the biggest challenges that surfing has, like all water sports, is that we have to travel to the best areas and not all of them will be good.
In Spain we can practice surfing in Fuerteventura (Canary Islands), a perfect place, where the weather is good almost all year round and there are beaches for all levels.
How much does surfing cost? Essential material
Browsing blogs and online stores you will see thousands of products, but not all of them are essential.
With some foundations we can already take the first steps in this world. In any case, the most important thing when starting this sport is to do it with professionals who can guide you in the first steps and will save you a lot of time in the learning process. And that’s why we suggest you book a surf course on your next trip. In the surfing schools they teach us this sport and give us the possibility to use their equipment, thus saving on the total budget.
Once we have tried surfing and we have been taken by the adrenaline of this sport, we have to think with a clear mind and make a budget to really know how much surfing costs. In our opinion, the following three elements are essential to start practicing this sport without forgetting about our budget:
Wetsuit for starters
The wetsuit depends a lot on the season and on the place where we are going to surf. If we can only afford one model, we recommend a 3/2 mm wetsuit, as long as the water temperature is between 14 and 20 degrees. These wetsuits, as well as being versatile, will last you a long time without losing their insulating properties. If you have to use it daily, we recommend buying more than one or changing it every year. The price of these wetsuits will range from 100 euros (basic models) to 400 euros (advanced models).
Cheap surfboard
A second-hand surfboard can be a great choice if we want to save few euros. When it comes to how much surfing costs, second hand materials can help us save on our purchases. If, on the other hand, you want to indulge in the pleasure of a brand new board, you can find it starting from 200-300 euros depending on the brand and with “soft” material (ideal for starting out). The soft boards with sizes between 7’6 and 9′ are the most recommended for taking your first steps on the water, as they are long boards that give you an easy paddling and offer greater stability.
Leash or lanyard: life insurance in surfing
Many people, when they see us surfing from the beach, think that we are not attached to the board but in reality we are. We are attached to the board by a mechanism called leash. This device is essential for beginners, surfing without a leash is a great feeling, but it is not recommended for those who have not mastered this sport. Investing in a good comfortable and durable leash will save us from more than one scary situation and we must look for one that can be resistant and does not break in the middle of the surf session. The most recommended leash for those who are taking their first steps in surfing is between 7′ and 8′ long and we can find it in specialized shops starting from 20/25 euros. In general, it is important to say that the size of the leash depends on the size of the board and the height of the wave I want to ride.
Approximate budget to start surfing
With this post we have solved the initial question about how much surfing costs.
With the essential material and with a basic budget, we must consider a total of at least 350-400 euros. Starting from this price range we can have a wetsuit, a surfboard and a leash.
We already know approximately, without considering surf travel, how much surfing costs if we are beginners. We have seen that it is an affordable figure and that we can profit from it, given that they are products that will last us a long time.
A good option, if we improve thanks to the surf school lessons, is to recover part of the investment by selling the material and buying a more advanced one. As we get better at the sport, we need to re-budget how much surfing costs.
Don’t want to face this expense right away? Don’t worry, in our Surfintrip surf school in Fuerteventura you can take your first steps in surfing without spending that much money. The courses that we offer in Corralejo include in the price the surfboard, wetsuit, leash, lycra and wax.
