On the Sufintrip blog, we have always talked about topics related to surfing and the many benefits that this activity can offer. But let’s not forget that surfing, just like any other sport, can be combined with many exercises and activities that can help improve your skills in the water. Although at first you may not believe this, you will be amazed by the benefits that other activities can bring when combined with surfing. For this very reason, in today’s post we’ll talk about the combination of surf and yoga during your holidays.

We are sure that you will find this information very useful. Take good note of everything we say in the following lines, so you get the most out of both disciplines!

How can yoga be beneficial to our surfing skills?

At this point, you might ask yourself what surf and yoga during your holidays have in common, and maybe you might think that they don’t have many things that link them together.  But in reality, these two activities have many things in common, and at Surfintrip we would love to clear things up for you! Yoga is an activity that really focuses on posture, relaxation and concentration. These three elements are very important in surfing as well, without which you will find it very hard to ride a wave properly.

To clarify even further, we can give you a few examples that can help you better understand the link between yoga and surfing: while practising yoga, we focus a lot on our breathing and body awareness during every exercise. These elements are very important while surfing as well, so we can be as one with the ocean and the waves. Another element that brings these two activities together is balance, without which you will find both surfing and yoga pretty challenging.

Surf and yoga during your holidays: flexibility and breathing as key elements

As already mentioned in our post ‘most used muscles while surfing’, flexibility is a skill that, with practice, can be improved, no matter if you are a beginner at surfing or a seasoned and experienced wave rider. Most surfers dedicate a lot of time and effort to improve their flexibility through training and practising, specifically while out of the water.

It’s important to notice that stretching after a surf session is going to help you relieve a lot of tension that is accumulated during your exercise in the water, while also preventing damage to your muscles. Injury prevention is essential if you want to keep practising some surf and yoga during your holidays.

Another element that yoga and surfing share is breathing, especially the ability to control it, so we are always ready when facing a new challenge in or out of the water. Riding a wave, particularly as a beginner, can be quite a stressful experience! This is partly why practising yoga can be very advantageous, given that with yoga we practice to keep calm while maintaining correct posture for an extended amount of time. So don’t forget to practice yoga during your holiday!

Take advantage of yoga: practice it as much as you can when you can’t surf!

One of the best tips that we can give you regarding this topic is the following: during periods of time in which we cannot surf, because of weather and bad forecast conditions, or due to something like surfing in the time of Coronavirus, it’s very important to always find the time to practice yoga or similar exercises so as to keep and improve our fitness and flexibility.

As it can happen with many activities that we learn during the course of our life, if we don’t practice them frequently, we will end up feeling that we have had a massive setback the moment we start practicing again. To avoid this terrible feeling, we suggest having a daily routine of exercises and activities that can help you keep your mind and body healthy, so when you get back in the water, you will feel much better than you expected.
